forklift

you did back exercises
so you could carry heavier loads
that's pretty ambitious of you
i can carry mine on my own
in your apartment downtown
i recall my home
didn't expect to see your faces
but there yours was all alone
and you became the forklift
that you needed to be
to lift yourself out of this place
and far away from me

my mother called yesterday
she asked if i needed shampoo
i probably didn't
but i couldn't tell you
constantly frustrated
but that's nothing new
i need a friend who is patient
when i'm talking about you
remembering 2009
when i first met you
you were small and unbroken
and impervious to ridicule
i couldn't say it well back then
but you should know that i miss you
yer my very best friend
and i can't wait to see you

the sum of your parts

i took calculus
my senior year
i did well enough
i'm pretty sure it represents
some kind of fear
a well balanced match between us
there's nothing left to say
i'm not sure what yer looking for
there is nothing left to say
i'm not sure what is needed
the sum of yer parts
is not an equation i
can do in my head

will you hold my hand today?
i mean it in a friendly way
i want to go outside and play
the feelings that i can't convey
there's no such thing as a dumb cliche
there is no such thing as a dumb cliche
listen to the words i say
i am more than just a dumb cliche

it's getting late i should go to bed
and i never felt any existential dread
does that mean i can't spend today in my bed
there's no one at home and no texts to be read
and i hope at the end of the set
all of my friends stay and no one's upset
i hope we all dance and we all break a sweat
and i find a working outlet
i've heard what yer thinking of
and it tears me to pieces
is it yer mom you were thinking of
a whole army, small but not giving in
i'm feeling safer than i knew i could be
with yer arms dragging me straight into the sea

you cannot tell me that I’m not in love
and I will fall for everyone
just because
i am not in high school
doesn’t mean
that yer not still
and won’t always be
you will always be
my best friend

i love who i am
you can't take that away from me nobody can
it's not going as planned
but it never does and if it was it would be a boring program
i love who i'll be
gonna try to make the best of it no matter how it seems
i'm gonna gather up debris
and build the best monument to life ever seen
no more low self-esteem
we're gonna be all we dream
we are bursting at the seam
we are a brilliant sunbeam
